Implanting Stem Cells Into The Brain Might Extend Human Lifespan – ScienceAlert

Aug, 1st 2017 12:45 pm, Article Recommended by Dr. J. Smith

As far as brain regions go, the hypothalamus is something of a multi-tasker: it helps control our temperature, hunger, sleep, emotions, and sex drive. But that’s not all. A new study suggests it’s also responsible for keeping us young, thanks to a supply of neural stem cells that regulate our ageing. Continue reading

Life extension – Wikipedia

Life extension science, also known as anti-aging medicine, indefinite life extension, experimental gerontology, and biomedical gerontology, is the study of slowing down or reversing the processes of aging to extend both the maximum and average lifespan. Some researchers in this area, and “life extensionists”, “immortalists” or “longevists” (those who wish to achieve longer lives themselves), believe that future breakthroughs in tissue rejuvenation, stem cells, regenerative medicine, molecular repair, gene therapy, pharmaceuticals, and organ replacement (such as with artificial organs or xenotransplantations) will eventually enable humans to have indefinite lifespans (agerasia[1]) through complete rejuvenation to a healthy youthful condition. Continue reading

Can Deprenyl (Selegiline) Extend Human Lifespan?

Apr, 19th 2016 7:01 pm, Article Recommended by Dr. J. Smith

by Ben Best CONTENTS: LINKS TO SECTIONS (First section written mostly in the mid-1990s.) Several years ago L-deprenyl (selegiline) was the darling drug of life-extensionists. Some negative Parkinson’s Disease studies then caused Deprenyl to fall into disrepute among both life-extensionists and conventional gerontologists. But recent studies merit a re-evaluation of deprenyl by life extensionists Continue reading

Study finds hormone FGF21 extends lifespan of lab mice 40 …

Scientists have discovered a way to extend the lives of lab mice by 40 percent and suggest that it could one day be used as a treatment to boost human lifespans. In a study published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), the researchers show that increasing levels of a hormone called FGF21 can protect against the loss of immune function that comes with age. Lead study author Vishwa Deep Dixit, Ph.D., professor of comparative medicine and immunobiology at the Yale School of Medicine, said that while previous studies have shown the hormone enhances lifespan in mice and could be a potential treatment for type 2 diabetes, this research is the first to suggest that FGF21 can protect against age-related decline of immune function in mice — a finding that could have big implications for humans. Bill Andrews on Telomere Basics: Curing Aging Bill Andrews, Ph.D. and Jon Cornell Since before recorded history began, people have been searching for ways to live longer. We all know the story of Ponce de Leon’s search for the elusive Fountain of Youth, but even two millennia earlier, emperor Qin Shi Huang of China was sending out ships full of hundreds of men and women in search of an Elixir of Life that would make him immortal. The sale of putative anti-aging products such as nutrition, physical fitness, skin care, hormone replacements, vitamins, supplements and herbs is a lucrative global industry, with the US market generating about $50billion of revenue each year.[2] Some medical experts state that the use of such products has not been proven to affect the aging process and many claims regarding the efficacy of these marketed products have been roundly criticized by medical experts, including the American Medical Association.[2][3][4][5][6] However, it has not been shown that the goal of indefinite human lifespans itself is necessarily not feasible; some animals such as hydra, planarian flatworms, and certain sponges, corals, and jellyfish do not die of old age and exhibit potential immortality.[7][8][9][10] The ethical ramifications of life extension are debated by bioethicists.
